Meat in his pants! 5 craziest crimes of the week

A woman thrown in jail for leftover pasta sauce and an inmate no one noticed was missing are among the weirdest crime stories of the week:
1. Jail didn't know inmate escaped for 2 days: An inmate's escape from a jail north of Seattle went undetected last week—until the man's defense lawyer stopped by for a visit and couldn't find his client. Rhyan Vasquez, 19, is now back in custody in Marysville City Jail and faces a possible escape charge. He managed to slip out thanks, in part, to a ... Bible study class.
2. Man's cologne gives him away to cops: Best line in a police report in a while: "Agosto mentioned he regretted applying cologne on his person prior to leaving his house." It comes via police in Lebanon, Ore., in reference to 35-year-old Charles Agosto, who refused to stop after a traffic violation, cops say, leading them on a high-speed chase earlier this week. He actually got away—at least at first. Officers eventually tracked him down in what may have turned out to be a decent hiding spot, had his Eau de Blown Cover not wafted over.
3. Woman held in jail for weeks over SpaghettiOs sauce: When Ashley Gabrielle Huff was pulled over by a police officer in Gainesville, Ga., for a tag light violation, the officer immediately thought she was looking and acting a little weird. After finding a spoon in her car with residue on it (and supposedly field-testing it), the officer was convinced it was meth and arrested the 23-year-old. She insisted it was just SpaghettiOs sauce, but ended up in jail anyway. Then the truth came out.

4. Guy accused of shooting neighbor's house gives bizarre excuse: George Byrd, a 31-year-old convicted felon, at first told police in Pennsylvania he didn't shoot a bullet through his neighbor's window. But a detective says Byrd not only acknowledged that he did it during his arraignment, but blamed his transgression on his own not-entirely-believable ignorance.
5. Cops: Grocery worker lifted $1.2K worth of meat in his pants: Sometimes, a simple plan works best if you're a criminal. And sometimes, that plan to shove $1,200 worth of meat down your pants and walk out of a supermarket undetected doesn't end so well. Police in Cortlandt, NY, have charged Gregory Rodriguez with grand larceny after accusing him of doing just that at the A&P where he works.

American TV cameraman in Liberia tests positive for Ebola

An American freelance TV cameraman working for NBC News in West Africa is being flown back to the United States for treatment after testing positive for Ebola.
Ashoka Mukpo is the fourth American to have contracted Ebola in Liberia.
The video journalist, 33, reported symptoms on Wednesday and was running a slight fever. On Thursday he was tested for the virus at a treatment center, with the result coming back positive, NBC News said in a story posted on its website.
He is being treated in the Liberian capital of Monrovia and will be flown back this weekend to the United States for treatment, said his mother, Diane Mukpo, on Friday'sToday show.
The freelancer had been hired Tuesday as a second cameraman for NBC's medical correspondent, Nancy Snyderman, who is in Liberia reporting on the Ebola epidemic with three other NBC News employees.
In an interview on Today, Snyderman said Mukpo had joined her 72 hours prior to realizing he felt ill.
"We shared a work space. We shared vehicles. We shared equipment," she said. "But everyone here is hyper-alert. We have not been in close proximity. No one shakes hands. There's no hugging.

"We are doing everything we can to get him the best care possible,'' NBC News President Deborah Turness said in a note to staff. "He will be flown back to the United States for treatment at a medical center that is equipped to handle Ebola patients."
Turness said Snyderman and others in her crew will be flown back to the United States on a private charter flight and will be quarantined in the United States for 21 days "in an abundance of caution.''
She said none of the NBC employees have shown symptoms but are being closely monitored.
The cameraman also is a writer and has been working in Liberia on various projects for the past three years, NBC News said.
Turness said the rest of the NBC News crew, including Snyderman, have no symptoms but are being monitored.

Liberia says Dallas Ebola patient lied on exit documents

Liberian authorities said Thursday they will prosecute Dallas Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan when he returns home for allegedly lying on his airport departure screening questionnaire about whether he had had contact with a person infected with the virus.
The latest Ebola outbreak has killed 3,338 in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Senegal and Nigeria, the World Health Organization says, prompting several West African countries to closely monitor travelers in and out of the country.
On the form obtained by the Associated Press and confirmed by a Liberian government official, Duncan answered "no" to questions about whether he had cared for an Ebola patient or touched the body of someone who had died in an area affected by Ebola.
"He will be prosecuted" when he returns to Liberia, Binyah Kesselly, chairman of the board of directors of the Liberia Airport Authority, told reporters.
He said that people like Duncan and Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian-American with Ebola who traveled to Nigeria and infected people there, have brought a "stigma" upon Liberians living abroad.
Duncan is in serious condition in a Dallas hospital.
On Sept. 15, days before he left Liberia for the United States, Duncan -- a LIberian national -- helped carry 19-year-old Marthalene Williams into a taxi to go to the hospital after her family was unable to get an ambulance, The New York Times reports, quoting family and neighbors.
Williams, who was seven months pregnant, was turned away at the hospital because of lack of space in the Ebola ward, the Times reports. She re

turned home that evening, hours before she died.
It is not clear whether Duncan knew of the woman's diagnosis, which initially appeared to be pregnancy related, at the time he left the country. Officials in Liberia said Duncan showed no symptoms when he boarded the plane and he was therefore not contagious.
Ebola can only be spread through the bodily fluids of people showing signs of the disease.
The Daily Observer newspaper in Monrovia reported that a source close to Duncan said that he "did not leave Liberia sick," but that before flying off to Dallas he may have come in contact with people who had symptoms.
Until being terminated in early September, he had worked as a personal driver for the general manager of Safeway Cargo, a FedEx contractor in Liberia. He did not work for FedEx, as earlier reported, the company said Thursday.
Liberia's information minister, Lewis Brown, said stringent screening measures at Roberts International Airport were preventing the disease from spreading by air travel.
"These screening programs are monitored regularly," he said.
Jens David Ohlin, a professor of law at Cornell Law School in New York, said it's unusual to prosecute someone for this sort of infraction.
"Prosecuting an Ebola patient for lying on his screening form represents a particularly harsh treatment for someone on the precipice of death," Ohlin said. "Usually, compassion is the order of the day for Ebola patients. However, the Liberian government is clearly concerned that members of the public will not take their screening protocols seriously. If Ebola patients know that there are no legal consequences for lying on these forms, they will not take the screening seriously. And if travelers don't take the screening seriously, other countries will respond by closing air travel to Liberia."

Hong Kong protesters threaten to call off crisis talks

HONG KONG -- Three main pro-democracy protest groups, who have virtually shut down the city for almost a week in a display of civil disobedience, blamed Hong Kong authorities for an outbreak of brawling and scuffling Friday and threatened to break off talks with the government aimed at defusing the crisis.
The skirmishes erupted in several areas of Hong Kong as people opposed to the continued occupation of key business areas clashed with demonstrators determined to maintain their blockades.
Demonstrators blamed the authorities for the violence, which put into jeopardy talks to ease tension.
"If the government does not immediately prevent the organized attacks on supporters of the Occupy movement, the students will call off dialogue on political reform with the government," said a joint statement by the Hong Kong Federation of Students, Scholarism and Occupy Central with Love and Peace.
After almost a week of peaceful protest and mass civil disobedience, Hong Kong's leader said Thursday night that his deputy would hold talks with student representatives on constitutional reform. Restrictive election proposals issued by the Chinese central government, which took control of Hong Kong in 1997, sparked widespread public opposition, and brought tens of thousands of people into Hong Kong's streets.

By Friday, a work day after a two-day vacation for China's National Day, some residents clashed with protesters over the continued disruption to their daily lives and businesses. The worst clashes occurred in Mong Kok. At Causeway Bay, on Hong Kong Island, at least 20 mostly older residents protested the continued blockade of normally busy Hennessy Road.
"The protesters are so extreme, they influence the whole of society, I think they've been paid to do this," complained Raymond Nip, 67, who said he was unable to take his grandchildren to school. "We want to keep things as they are now, we don't need to change," Nip said of the Occupy movement's demands for political reform. "Hong Kong is fine now," he said.
While numbers were significantly down on previous days, many students busied themselves maintaining barricades, and manning supply stations. "The protests may shrink to a smaller area, but we will keep roads shut for one to two months," said Edward Lim, 17, in Admiralty, the key protest zone beside the Hong Kong government headquarters. We will never give up and people power will never lose," he said Thursday morning.
"I would like to appeal to members of the public that they should observe the laws of Hong Kong when they are expressing their views," police spokesman Steve Hui said when asked about the confrontation in Mong Kok, a working class area far from the main protest site in downtown Hong Kong, the Admiralty area near the territory's government headquarters.
The protests, led mostly by university students, have been in the streets since last Friday, pushing for the Chinese government to reverse its recent decision requiring a mostly pro-Beijing committee approve candidates for Hong Kong's first election to choose the territory's leader in 2017. The demonstrators want open nominations.
The protests are the biggest challenge to Beijing's authority since China took control of the former British colony in 1997.
Student protesters had threatened to surround or occupy government buildings if the city's chief executive, Leung Chun-ying, did not step down by Thursday, and police had warned of serious consequences if they did that. Late Thursday, Leung held a news conference to offer the talks, but said "I will not resign."

2 more GM recalls affect half million vehicles

DETROIT — General Motors on Friday recalled more than half a million vehicles in North America, including new Cadillac crossovers and discontinued Saab sport-utility vehicles to fix potential loose joints and worn threads blamed for three crashes and two injuries.
The two recalls collectively affect 524,384 vehicles in North America, including 379,401 units across the USA.
The largest recall is 290,107 units of the 2010-15 Cadillac SRX and 2011-12 Saab 9-4X because "improper torqueing could possibly result in a loose joint and worn threads that could cause the toe adjuster link to separate," GM officials said.
The company said it had reported the condition Sept. 17 to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In the smaller of the latest two recalls, GM said it would fix 89,294 units in the U.S. of the 2013-15 Chevrolet Spark minicar "because corrosion can cause the secondary hood latch striker to stick in the open position."
"If the primary latch is not engaged, the hood could open unexpectedly," GM said.
About 13,000 units of the Spark, imported from Korea, will be parked at U.S. dealerships until the fixes can be made. The Spark is the second least expensive new car sold in the U.S. this year, according to a Cars.com review.
GM said it did not know about any crashes blamed on the issue.
The automaker said several weeks ago that it had largely finished its review of past defect data, which had led to a long stream of recalls this summer in wake of a deadly ignition-switch defect that spawned government investigations and lawsuits.
